GREER, SOUTH CAROLINA — Family, friends, and members of the community are mourning the passing of Bryan Derek “Big Funky” Wilson, who died on June 27, 2026, at the age of 45. His passing has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him, as they remember a man whose warmth, generosity, and unforgettable personality touched countless people throughout his life.
Born and raised in Marion, North Carolina, Derek was the beloved son of Bryan Wade and Joy Smith Wilson. From an early age, he was known for his friendly nature, strong character, and ability to bring people together. These qualities remained with him throughout his life and helped shape the meaningful relationships he built with family, friends, colleagues, and members of his community.
Derek was a proud graduate of Erskine College, earning his degree in 2003. During his time at the college, he was a valued member of the baseball team, demonstrating dedication, teamwork, and a competitive spirit that would continue to influence his approach to life. His experiences as a student-athlete helped forge lifelong friendships and memories that remained important to him over the years.
A devoted member of Lake Bowen Baptist Church, Derek’s faith played a significant role in his life. He was known for his commitment to his church family and for living with compassion, humility, and a genuine concern for others. Those who knew him often recall his willingness to offer encouragement, lend a helping hand, and brighten any room with his presence.
Above all else, Derek treasured his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Kristen Mabus Wilson, and their twin daughters, Brantley Grace Wilson and Brynnley Faith Wilson, who were the center of his world. He is also survived by his sister, Alicia Dell Wilson of Wilmington, North Carolina, along with many extended family members and close friends who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Derek’s life during a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at The Wood Mortuary in Greer, South Carolina, with Pastor Bill Harris officiating. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. at the mortuary, providing an opportunity for loved ones to offer condolences and share memories.
In honoring Derek’s memory, memorial donations may be made to Black Tie Boston Rescue or Erskine College Baseball, causes that were meaningful to him and his family.
Bryan Derek “Big Funky” Wilson will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, a loyal friend, a former athlete, and a cherished member of his community. His legacy of love, kindness, and friendship will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will remain a lasting source of comfort and inspiration for those fortunate enough to have shared in his life.
