MECHANICSVILLE, MD — The community is mourning the tragic passing of Malik Javonn Somerville, 27, of Chaptico, Maryland, who lost his life in a single-vehicle crash on the morning of Tuesday, June 30, in Mechanicsville. His sudden death has left family, friends, and loved ones grieving the loss of a young man taken far too soon.

According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were dispatched around 7:40 a.m. to the 27500 block of Thompson Corner Road after reports of a serious motor vehicle collision. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found a green pickup truck that had left the roadway and collided with a tree, resulting in severe damage.

Authorities reported that Malik Somerville was the driver of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado involved in the crash. He became trapped inside the vehicle following the impact. Despite the immediate response and efforts of emergency personnel at the scene, he was sadly pronounced deceased.

Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Thompson Corner Road before leaving the roadway. It reportedly struck a utility pole and then continued into a group of trees. Officials have stated that speed and driver error appear to be possible contributing factors; however, the investigation is still ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
