MECHANICSVILLE, MD — Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal single-vehicle crash in St. Mary’s County as Malik Javonn Somerville, 27, of Chaptico, Maryland. His death has left family, friends, and members of the community mourning a life lost far too soon.

According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 7:40 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, to the 27500 block of Thompson Corner Road following multiple reports of a serious motor vehicle accident. Several callers reported that a pickup truck had crashed and rolled over, leaving the driver trapped inside and unresponsive.

When first responders arrived, they discovered a green 2003 Chevrolet Silverado that had sustained severe damage after leaving the roadway while traveling eastbound on Thompson Corner Road. Investigators said the vehicle struck a utility pole before continuing into a group of trees, where it came to rest. The impact caused extensive damage to the truck and left the driver trapped inside the wreckage.

A preliminary investigation conducted by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit found that the vehicle veered off the roadway for reasons that remain under investigation. Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the crash, though initial findings suggest that speed and driver error may have played a role in the incident.

Despite the swift response of firefighters, deputies, and emergency medical personnel, Somerville was pronounced dead at the scene. The Maryland State Police Aviation Command had been placed on standby in the event that air medical transport became necessary, but the severity of the crash ultimately made such transport unnecessary.

Officials confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the collision. The investigation remains active as authorities continue gathering evidence and examining the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
